are partnering to present an exclusive

symposium on the anthropology of giving, highlighting the diverse cultural influences of generosity around the world,
to help us understand contemporary philanthropy.

at the Maison de la Recherche of the Institut National des Langues et Civilisations Orientales

2:30pm – Inaugural words by Philippe Advani, President of Fondation Inalco, and Axelle Davezac, CEO of Fondation de France.

Keynote speech by Jean-Noël Robert, Emeritus professor at Collège de France, Chair of Philology of Japanese Civilization.

3pm – Panel 1: From Charity to Strategic Philanthropy: Trends in European and American Giving

This first panel will compare the regions’ different practices of giving through historical and social lenses. Thanks to our experts on Europe, Canada, and the US, we will look back to the cultural roots of generosity and their reasons for changing across time. This will set the foundation for further discussion about present-day philanthropy, and how it can be better understood.

4:15pm – Panel 2: The Asian specificity: Philanthropy as an integrated practice

This panel sets itself as a contrast to the first, showing how one region can host, within itself, diverse expressions of generosity. Our local and European experts will explore the current meanings and roles associated to philanthropy in Hong Kong, China, Singapore and Thailand, and how they are deeply woven in the social fabric and relate to our western understandings.
