On February 6, 2023, two massive earthquakes struck southern Turkey and northern Syria, leading to the death of more than 16,000 people, and thousands more injured, as well as large-scale destruction. The number of casualties is rising by the hour. As of today, Fondation de France, which is already active in the region, is releasing 100,000 euros and launching an appeal for donations to reinforce its work in the field and provide emergency relief to the victims.
The scale of the disaster that has just struck Turkey and Syria is enormous. The largest earthquake recorded in the region took place in Turkey on August 17, 1999, causing the death of 17,000 people, a thousand of whom were in Istanbul.
Fondation de France is mobilizing to bring emergency relief to inhabitants
Once again, Fondation de France is stepping up to help victims. With its experience in the region, and backed by its local partners, Fondation de France is swiftly deploying its initial response to provide desperately needed basic necessities. Next, it will undertake a number of sustainable reconstruction projects.
Thanks to the generosity of donors and donor-advised funds, Fondation de France has already worked with local nonprofits in Syria, for several years. In order to both address the impact of the disaster and preempt future potential hazards, Fondation de France’s priority is to support local Turkish and Syrian nonprofits directly. These organizations have a proven track record, they are closely involved with all those affected by the earthquake, without discrimination.

France Télévisions is joining forces with Fondation de France to help thousands of families, victims of the earthquakes that struck Turkey and Syria.

Fondation de France has been intervening in post-emergency situations for more than 30 years. It was one of the key players in the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, in the Haiti earthquakes since 2010, in the 2015 Nepal earthquake and in the 2017 Caribbean hurricane season. More recently, it has been active in Syria and in Lebanon in 2020, as well as in Ukraine since 2022. It has demonstrated its expertise in addressing the needs of victims, in particular by providing psychological support to those most affected, helping to rebuild the homes of the most vulnerable and contributing to economic recovery. Fondation de France will monitor the projects supported for as long as necessary.
