The Observatory's papers

The Philanthropy & Society Observatory is launching a new series, the Observatory’s papers, that aims to shed light on today’s major social and societal challenges and establish a link with issues of public interest. Each edition will offer an overview of current issues relating to a specific topic. The Observatory’s paper will also include recommendations on how public interest actors (foundations, associations, civil society organisations, etc.) can contribute.

This second edition of the Observatory’s paper examines the link between media and democracy. In particular, it provides an overview of contemporary issues relating to news, democracy and funding models, and explores the role that philanthropy can play in this media ecosystem, which is subject to persistent economic, technological, sociological and political pressures that are testing its ability to fulfil its essential democratic functions.

This first edition of the Observatory’s paper examines the link between digital technology and democracy. In particular, it explores how the digital revolution is transforming the definition, pursuit and implementation of the public interest. This issue offers analyses and recommendations for action to promote a use of digital technology that strengthens democracy, respects fundamental rights, encourages engagement and fosters the inclusion of all sections of society.
