Prisons: for a sustainable rehabilitation

Why is it important?

The prison population is constantly growing: the number of prisoners reached 66,400 for 57,800 places available in French prisons in 2015. This overpopulation, which is particularly worrisome in detention centers, is detrimental not only to the living conditions of the convicted, but also to their medical and social care, reducing the effectiveness of release preparation and recidivism prevention programs.

More than 200 projects funded since 1996

For many years, the Fondation de France has received – either unsolicited or through its various calls for projects – grant requests from associations that implement initiatives among detainees or among people leaving prison. Around 100 projects were funded between 1996 and 2010. Since the beginning of its program in 2013, around 100 new projects have received support.
