Philanthropy expertise without borders

Today’s major concerns – climate change, migration crisis, democratic values and human rights undermined – are all unquestionably global. To address them effectively, Fondation de France has chosen to work collaboratively, with its European and international partners. Our objective is three-fold: developing philanthropy across nations, sharing best practices and increasing the scope and impact of joint work on the ground.

Promoting generosity across borders

In all non-profit sectors, such as the environment, healthcare and combating poverty, challenges are increasingly global. However, solutions are very often found and tested at a country and sometimes community level. In 1998, Fondation de France and three European partners created the Transnational Giving Europe network to make it easier for donations to cross borders within Europe. Since then, the network has extended to 20 European countries, enabling donors to support the nonprofit of their choice securely, while taking advantage of the tax benefits available in their home country.

Created in 2000, Friends of Fondation de France  is a US-based non-profit organization. All US donors – that is, individuals, foundations or companies residing in the United States – can make a donation to a charity or a project led by a French entity and take advantage of US tax benefits.

If you are a project or donor-advised fund leader
You can raise funds in Europe or in the United States, while enabling your international donors to enjoy the tax benefits in force in their country. Better still, you don’t need to set up an organization locally.

Sharing best practices

Global challenges require that effective and structured philanthropy actions be carried out at European and international levels. Since its creation, Fondation de France has developed many collaborations with its counterparts in a number of countries. It has contributed to the creation of the European Foundation Center (EFC), now Philea, following its merger with Dafne, Axelle Davezac being a member of its Board of Directors. The network promotes an ecosystem with over 10,000 foundations, nonprofits and networks serving the common good in more than 30 European countries. Philea supports the development of philanthropy and encourages the sharing of best practices. It also gathers stakeholders together and advocates for a legislative and administrative environment conducive to philanthropy throughout Europe.

Exchanging know-how, pooling knowledge, supporting lobbying efforts in Europe and further afield are some of the aims of Wings in Sao Paulo, Brazil, a partner of Fondation de France. Wings is a global partner with more than 180 change players who are committed to revealing the full potential of the philanthropy sector. Currently, Fondation de France is working with Wings and Trust Africa on a vital project to reinforce the philanthropy ecosystem in Western Africa. It consists in the active mapping of philanthropy and non-profit actors to enhance local, regional and international collaborations.

Fondation de France is also a member of the Network of European Foundations (NEF), which Alexandre Giraud, Sponsorship Director at Fondation de France, currently chairs. This network of European foundations reinforces cooperation among European foundations and develops joint projects on the ground. For instance, Fondation de France is heavily involved in the European Programme for Integration and Migration (EPIM), as it firmly believes that a collective and European-wide approach is key to addressing the issue of migration. Civitates, which is very active on the issues of democracy and human rights is another key program Fondation de France is involved with as part of NEF. Fondation de France is also a member of Ariadne, a leading European network, with its donors and more than 600 non-profit organizations working towards social change, human rights and justice.

Fondation de France also partners with the European Venture Philanthropy Association (EVPA), whose members practice venture philanthropy or impact investment throughout Europe. EVPA helps investors and funders connect for mutual enrichment, as they aim for deeper societal impact.

Promoting collaborations between the non-profit sector and the world of research is essential for Fondation de France, to enhance and promote knowledge of the non-profit sector and related societal topics. Which is why it is also an active member of ERNOP, a European network on philanthropy research which brings together foundations, universities and researchers. Currently, around 250 members from over 25 European countries have joined the rapidly expanding network.

Greater impact where it matters

Another continent, another collaboration In western Africa. Fondation de France leads a number of joint projects with other programs such as PAFAO (Promoting Family Farming in Western Africa) and JAFOWA, for farming organizations in Burkina-Faso and Senegal.

As part of emergency response activities, Fondation de France has set up a new partnership with the Agence Française de Développement. In August 2020, when Beirut experienced a catastrophic explosion, the Agence Française de Développement was able to match the funds raised by Fondation de France, totaling 2 million euros. This collaboration helps reinforce support for local stakeholders over the long term.

Beyond these partnerships, Fondation de France develops special relationships with network and foundations in the French and English speaking world, North America and Asia.
