Philanthropy expertise without borders

Today’s major concerns – climate change, migration crisis, democratic values and human rights undermined – are all unquestionably global. To address them effectively, we have chosen to work collaboratively with our European and international partners. Fondation de France’s objective is three-fold: developing philanthropy across nations, sharing best practices and increasing the scope and impact of joint work on the ground.

Promoting generosity across borders

In all nonprofit sectors, such as the environment, healthcare and combating poverty, challenges are increasingly global. Yet, solutions are very often designed and tested at country and even local levels. In 1998, Fondation de France and three European partners created the Transnational Giving Europe to make it easier for donations to cross borders within Europe. Since then, the network has extended to 20 European countries, enabling donors to support the nonprofit of their choice securely, while taking advantage of the tax benefits available in their home country.

Created in 2000, Friends of Fondation de France,is a US-based nonprofit organization. All US donors  that is, individuals, foundations or companies residing in the United States, can make a donation to a charity or a project led by a French entity, and benefit from the tax benefits afforded to them.

Are you the head of a project or donor-advised fund?
You can raise funds in Europe or in the United States and enable your international donors to enjoy the tax benefits of their country. Better still, you don’t need to set up an organization outside your nonprofit’s country.

Sharing best practices

Some global challenges require that effective and structured philanthropy actions be carried out at European and international levels. Since its creation, Fondation de France has developed many collaborations with its counterparts in a number of countries. Which is how it contributed to the creation of the European Foundation Center (EFC), Axelle Davezac currently being its Vice-Chair. The 250 European foundations in this network promote the development of philanthropy and encourage the sharing of practices. They also bring stakeholders together and advocate for a legislative and administrative environment conducive to philanthropy throughout Europe.

The Brussels-based Donors and Foundations of Europe (Dafne) network and Wings, based in Sao Paulo, Brazil, are all about exchanging know-how, pooling knowledge, supporting lobbying efforts in Europe and further afield. They are both Fondation de France partners.

Fondation de France is also a Network of European Foundations member. This network reinforces cooperation among foundations and develops joint projects on the ground. For example, Fondation de France is heavily invested in the European Programme for Integration, as it firmly believes that only a collective and European-wide response to the migrant crisis can be effective. Civitates, another key program Fondation de France is involved with, is very active on the issues of democracy and human rights. Fondation de France is also involved with Ariadne, Europe's leading philanthropy network for human rights and social changes.

Greater impact where it matters

Another continent, another collaboration. In western Africa, Fondation de France leads a number of joint projects with other programs such as Promoting Family Farming in Western Africa (PAFAO) and JAFOWA, for farming organizations in Burkina-Faso and Senegal.

As part of emergency response, Fondation de France has set up a new partnership with the French Development Agency (AFD). In August 2020, when Beirut experienced a catastrophic explosion, the French Development Agency was able to match the funds raised by Fondation de France, totaling 2 million euros. This collaboration provides emergency relief work carried out by local stakeholders and then supports them over the long term.

In addition to these partnerships, Fondation de France has developed special relationships with foundations in both the French and English speaking worlds. The United States, as well as Asia, lead the way with their hugely active and ongoing tradition of philanthropy.
