Our support for Ukraine
On February 28, 2022, a few days after the first Russian offensive on Ukrainian soil, the Fondation de France launched an appeal for solidarity to provide emergency aid to people affected by the conflict. Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, the Fondation has been coordinating with several European foundations and national and international associative networks to respond to priority needs, while maintaining a long-term approach.
In one year, nearly 9 million euros have been committed to support around a hundred initiatives, mainly in Ukraine and the neighboring countries of Poland, Romania and Moldavia. The first few months were devoted to evacuating threatened populations, sheltering them, and supplying essential goods (food, equipment, healthcare, education), with particular attention to psychological support for populations and social and humanitarian workers. A specific area of intervention has been dedicated to human rights: documenting violations (human trafficking, prisons, etc.) and protecting populations at risk, particularly women and children.
From autumn 2022 onwards, the focus will be on preparing for winter, for example by sending generators and heaters to reception centers and hospitals.
In June 2023, as the conflict persists, resources diminish and the needs of the population continue to grow, the Solidarité Ukraine committee has decided to close the call for projects in order to concentrate on supporting its key partners in the field. Through close collaboration, the objectives will be defined and adapted by the partners to move towards self-sufficiency (optimization of resources, fund-raising, structural reinforcement of the organization, sustainable actions, etc.).
On June 6, 2023, the destruction of the Novaia Kakhovka dam caused further displacement of populations and considerable environmental damage for generations to come. The Fondation de France immediately reinforced support for its local partners, to provide emergency humanitarian aid, evacuate the most vulnerable people and plan responses to the inherent food, industrial and ecological risks.
Thanks to your donations and the mobilization of our teams, the assistance we have provided has helped relieve the suffering of many families. But the stalemate and impact of the conflict in Ukraine mean that we must maintain our individual and collective efforts to provide aid as close as possible to the most vulnerable displaced and refugee populations.
